Carvalho Araújo was born in Braga in 1961, the city where he currently lives and works. In 1986, he took over the direction of CECA – Centro de Estudos Carvalho Araújo, a project laboratory testing a new way of looking at industrial design issues. In 1989, he developed a base program for the ARPA office furniture system, which was presented in 1990 at Orgatec in Cologne. Also in 1990, Araújo completed a Degree in Architecture at the Lisbon School of Architecture within the University of Lisbon, after having attended the first four years at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes of Porto. In 1996, he created the company J. M. Carvalho Araújo, Arquitectura e Design, S.A., where he continues to develop architecture projects of different scales and approaches, as well projects in industrial design. Between the years of 2005 and 2013 he combined the activity of teaching and professional practice as Chair of Projects in the Degree in Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the Catholic University of Viseu. In 2013 he founded a project workshop in São Paulo (Brazil). Currently, he is a consultant and creative director in several companies, and is regularly invited to participate in exhibitions, conferences and congresses, receiving several national and international distinctions both in the areas of Architecture and Product Design, such as the Design Plus Award, the Good Design Award, Sena da Silva Award and National Urban Rehabilitation Award.
